The Bells of Saint Mary's

The tower contains a ring of five bells. The treble and 2nd were cast by Thomas Mears of Whitechapel in 1829, the 3rd by John Darbie of Ipswich in 1623, the 4th by Myles Graye of Colchester and the tenor bell (weighing 9cwt 3qtr 11lb) was recast in 1897 by Taylors of Loughborough, having been a 16th century bell, its inscription asking prayers for Gregory Pascal, who died in 1541.

In 1897 the bells were re-tuned and placed in a new chiming frame, where they are hung ‘dead’ and a chiming apparatus was installed whereby they can be ‘clocked’, with the ropes attached to the clappers.
